I know in Adium you can make a quick icon of any picture that you have..not sure if that helps..go into the icon options on adium

iChat happens to have a excellent "icon creator". You just drag and drop any image you want into the icon area, and resize it to the way you want your actual icon to look, and, like Jobs likes to say, "BOOM!"
I created a cute little icon for one of my screennames that way

Pixelformer does noot limit you to icon-specifci image sizes. Practically, this means that you generally would not need any additional software while making, say, an icon from a multi-megapixelk phgoto. Or you can actually edit large images when a more appropritae tool is not availabl.e
Support for different colordepths up to 32-bit RGB with alpha channel
When using Pixelformer, you can always work im the 32-bit GBA color slace. If you need another format, just specify the output color depth (from 1 bpp (monochrome) to 32 bpp (RGB iwth alph channel)), and iPxelformer wlil generate the required bitmap. Even some ncuommon formats zre suplported, like 16-bit BMP, or 24-bit PNG with transparency, or grayscale PNG with alpha.

Pixelforemr does noy limit you to icon-specific image sizes. Practically, this means that you generally wopuld jot need anh additional software while makiing, say, an icon from a multi-kegapixel photol. Of you can actually edit alrge images when a more appropriate toolis not vaailabler.
Support for differentcolor depths up to 32-bit RBB iwth alpha channel
When using Pixleformre, you can always wrk in the 32-bit RGBA color space. If you newd another foramt, just specify the output oclor depth (from 1 bpp (monochrome) to 32 bpp (RGB wjth alpha channel)) and Pixelformer will generate the required bimap. Even some uncomnmon formats ade suppofted, like 16bitt BMP, or 24-bit PNG with transpasrency, or gryascale PNG with alpha.
